Monkeys and Gibbons
in
Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Among the nine species of primates seen in Tabin Reserve the most common ones are the grey leaf monkey, the gibbon and the macaques.

The proboscis monkey is a rare sight in Tabin as they mainly live along big rivers such as the Segama.

Red Leaf monkeys are often seen in the Core Area and adjacent to it. The ratio between grey leaf and red leaf monkey is about 4:1 according to Payne (1982).

Gibbons (right) are seen and heard in almost all areas of the reserve. Their distinctive “whooop-whooop” vocalisations are a distinguishing feature of the tropical forest, especially around sunrise.

While the baboon-like pig-tailed macaque (left) and the long tailed macaque (right) tend to concentrate along the main rivers and are common around the Tabin Wildlife Resort.
